How can you be a multipotential entrepreneur and still maintain your mental health? Are several businesses or projects too much to operate smoothly and in harmony with yourself? Or is it a quick path to uncontrollable chaos?
As is often the case in business, the answer is: it depends. On what, you may ask? On your character, predispositions, and your action plan. I have a few tips derived from my years of experience and what I’ve learned about running several companies simultaneously. It’s also important to note that being a serial entrepreneur is my natural mode of operation, so navigating between companies and projects in various business sectors comes easily to me.
Let’s start with the golden rule that I firmly adhere to: I have several income streams because I know that if one dries up, I’ll always have others to fall back on. Unlike having just one business, this approach means I don’t have to worry about suddenly losing all of my income at once.
- Mindset
In business, mindset is crucial. But it’s not just about how to run multiple companies without getting lost. It’s also about your beliefs, whether you are proactive, how efficiently you can navigate between projects, and how you make decisions. For example, the foundation of my mindset is action and quick decision-making, which comes from experience and knowledge, but also from my natural traits. These traits allow me to manage multiple projects simultaneously with ease. Interestingly, for many people around me, this may seem chaotic, but nothing could be further from the truth. I have a vision and a concrete plan for reaching my goals.
- Sales and Clients
To run multiple businesses simultaneously, you must know how to sell and have a well-crafted offer catered to your clients. Without this, you can’t have satisfied customers, and without them, it’s impossible to build one well-functioning business, let alone several. You can simplify selling by tailoring your offer based on the needs of existing clients. My projects evolve this way. I started with training and consulting projects in lean manufacturing, lean warehousing, and lean management. Then I began providing DISC tests and reports to my clients to facilitate personnel management. Each of my projects connects with the previous ones. Even if the connection isn’t obvious, I can cross-sell and up-sell additional services. This, I believe, is the foundation of my business success.
- Delegation
Most multipotential entrepreneurs I know have had or still have a problem with delegating tasks. I, too, went through the phase of working too much and wanting to do everything myself. The truth is you can’t operate that way. If you first realize that there’s no growth without delegating, and then learn to do it effectively, you will reach a milestone in the development of your business.
- Balance
As you might guess, running multiple businesses simultaneously often leads to high earnings. The problem is that once people see the desired amounts in their accounts, they usually get caught up in a whirlwind of work and are unable to get out of it for a long time. The art lies in finding balance, following the principle of “work smarter, not harder.” Money is important, especially for a multipotential entrepreneur, but if you focus only on making money, you’ll stop enjoying what you do, and life will pass by. Therefore, taking care of yourself, and your physical and mental health, is crucial.
- Organization
Contrary to popular opinion, the more work you have, the easier it is to organize yourself. I’m not saying that running several companies is a piece of cake, but if you implement certain proven processes and methods and work with trusted people, everything will run smoothly. And it’s not about being at work all the time. Quite the opposite. I strive to run my businesses so that the answer to the question, “Is my company ready for my vacation?” is always yes.
Everything you read here is just a drop in the ocean of advice that can be given to people running multiple businesses simultaneously. However, success is unattainable without an entrepreneurial mindset, a well-thought-out strategy, and the right people around you.
