In a remarkable initiative aimed at enriching the educational and cultural experiences of Saudi students, 17 Saudi universities, along with over 120 students accompanied by deans of student affairs and supervisors, embarked on a scientific journey to Japan. This educational odyssey was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education, reflecting the government’s commitment to diversifying cultural perspectives within the Kingdom’s universities.This excursion stands as a testament to the efforts to strengthen the partnership between Saudi Arabia and Japan, aligning seamlessly with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This transformative vision aims to empower Saudi university students and elevate their capabilities to meet the challenges of the modern world. The journey to Japan serves as a vivid example of how international exposure can broaden horizons and cultivate a global perspective among students.
Exploring Tokyo: A Cultural OdysseyThe students’ journey commenced with an exciting exploration of Tokyo, Japan’s vibrant capital. Their first day was filled with awe-inspiring visits to renowned landmarks. Keio University, situated in Minato-Tokyo, Japan, played host to the Saudi students. As one of Japan’s most prestigious universities, Keio offered the students a unique opportunity to engage with the local culture and educational systems.During their visit to Keio University, the students had the privilege of meeting Karen Makishima, a member of the Japanese House of Representatives. This interaction provided valuable insights into the political landscape of Japan, fostering a deeper understanding of the country’s governance and diplomacy. Engaging in discussions with Japanese students further enriched the cultural exchange, enabling both sides to appreciate the nuances of their respective educational systems.The day continued with visits to the historic Asakusa area and the iconic Tokyo Skytree Tower. Asakusa’s charming streets retain the old-world charm of Tokyo, featuring craft shops, traditional handicrafts, and delectable food stalls. Nearby stands the venerable Sensō-ji Temple, dating back to the year 645 and holding the distinction of being Tokyo’s oldest temple.The Tokyo Skytree Tower, with its towering height of 634 meters, showcased breathtaking panoramic views of the city. While it may be the second-largest tower globally, it leaves an indelible mark on visitors with its architectural magnificence.Embracing Tradition: The Samurai and Kimono ExperienceThe second day of the students’ journey delved into Japan’s rich cultural heritage. A captivating Samurai and Kimono experience awaited them, allowing students to don traditional Japanese summer attire and delve into the history of the Samurai and the Meiji restoration. The students’ exploration continued with a visit to the Japanese Parliament, where they delved into the historical context surrounding its establishment and the influential Meiji reform. This institution, located in Nagatachō, Chiyoda Prefecture, Tokyo, stands as a symbol of Japan’s democratic governance.Modern Marvels: Odaiba and High-Tech EntertainmentThe students’ journey also included a visit to Odaiba, a futuristic high-tech entertainment hub situated on a sprawling artificial island in Tokyo Bay. Accessible via the iconic Rainbow Bridge or the modern urikamome train, Odaiba offers an array of attractions, including the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. Notably, the plaza boasts a life-sized Gundam statue that captivates spectators with its towering height of 19.7 meters.Engineering Marvels: Bullet Trains and Mount FujiOn the third day, the students delved into Japan’s engineering marvels, beginning with a visit to the Bullet Train Museum. Located in Tokyo Bay, Shibuya, this facility showcases the fusion of art and technology, providing a captivating journey for the senses.Vibrant Urban Landscapes: Harajuku and ShibuyaThe students’ journey culminated with visits to the vibrant urban landscapes of Harajuku and Shibuya. Harajuku, known for its unique and eclectic fashion, offered students a glimpse into Tokyo’s avant-garde style. Shibuya, on the other hand, stands as Tokyo’s bustling business center, pulsating with life and energy.
The journey concluded with a visit to the Saudi Embassy in Japan, where students were introduced to the embassy’s roles in collaboration with relevant Japanese authorities, particularly in the field of information technology. This encounter served as an opportunity for the students to explore potential avenues for cooperation and knowledge exchange.Reflecting on their transformative journey, Rahaf Al-Juhani from the College of Computer Science and Engineering in Yanbu expressed her deep sense of honor in representing Saudi Arabia abroad.
