Discovering Inspiration: The Driving Values Behind Furless Beauty Ventures
Mariela founded Furless Permanent, Furless Beauty Institute, and The Trading Corner with one main mission, to “rid people of unwanted hair and make every client and student journey well informed, seamless and with the best interest of the client’s skin, development and overall rewarding experience at its core.”
With this mission in mind, Mariela lives by six core values that guide both her businesses and personal life: “quality, innovation, trust, inclusivity, respect, and sustainability”.
Business Evolution and Success Factors Since 2016
Mariela shared with us about the inception and expansion from one business with minimal staff to a larger group operating across multiple locations in two countries.
“I opened the first of three businesses in 2016 with one Therapist and one young Intern, and now the group is composed of three businesses, five locations, two countries, over 50 top notch skin and hair removal industry experts and educators assisting clients and students across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
I’m deeply committed to responsible and sustainable corporate practices and have an active role in my staff’s professional and personal advancement within the skin care and hair removal fields and beyond. I’ve successfully established myself as a leading permanent hair removal international subject matter expert and a consultant on technology and treatment advances, beauty business optimization and growth, and mentors many aspiring female entrepreneurs. Being active, supportive, open minded, constantly educating myself and taking courses and present in all the businesses’ key activities has been key to the success of my businesses and the success of others.” Mariela shared.

When we asked Mariela about a rewarding experience or success story from her journey as CEO of her ventures, she recalled 2 events and discussed the importance of taking risks and investing in both oneself and others, particularly individuals who may be considered underdogs.
“I have recruited former cleaners that had great potential and were hungry to grow, and trained them extensively for a couple of years, and they have become some of the best assets within the team. It has been rewarding, empowering and a great investment for the business. Never underestimate your gut feeling about the potential in an employee and the power you have to transform them into someone spectacular. It is not usual to see a leader recognizing, appreciating and pushing someone to come out of their shells and activate their full potential. If you interviewed our team members, you would be blown away by their stories and what they have accomplished for our business is remarkable.”
Upholding Professional Standards with a Large Team
Mariela shared with us the strategies employed to maintain high standards of professionalism and service quality within her businesses. She stressed training for skills and fosters an environment and internal culture where employees can innovate and learn from mistakes as being the most essential element to maintain high standards.
“Training is number one. Secondly, taking time to listen to employees and make them feel safe to innovate, be humble and honest about mistakes and see them as opportunities to grow and improve. Keeping a strong and healthy company culture that promotes teamwork has been a work in progress but in the last couple of years it has been a big source of pride, with our employee retention figures being on the highest, and with most of our employees being promoted to a new higher role (and more salary!) within 2 years alongside scholarships for courses and training to excel in their new roles, ie: a beauty business management course, project management courses, etc. Growing opportunities and being on top of employees’ career and personal goals to support them as well. Empowering employees to come to me and anyone in leadership to discuss their struggles, hopes and dreams proactively and working toward making them happen as much as possible. Everyone wins: clients with a high quality service and well trained team, employees feel empowered and motivated and the business performs well.”
Embedding Responsibility Across Furless Ventures
“Regarding sustainability, we are always looking for providers of reusable, upcycled, and recyclable or biodegradable consumables. We are also revising our operations standards to make sure there is minimal to no waste in what we do. However, our main beauty treatment which is electrolysis permanent hair removal, requires the least amount of consumables out of any other hair removal treatment – versus waxing and shaving which produces significant waste. Regarding CSR, firstly we start with our employees, and we have helped them build their dream home, helped paid for their kids to be first ones to go to university but we have actually helped our employees get high school degrees, learn how to drive, get their first car, learn how to swim, and even leave us to attend university themselves as adults. We also promote equality in terms of opportunities and pay to all employees regardless of nationality and gender. ”
