Diplomacy and human rights advocacy work to shape fairer societies by influencing policies, protecting vulnerable communities, and addressing global issues like human trafficking and social inequality. Governments, international organizations, and policymakers play a crucial role in creating opportunities for marginalized groups, ensuring equal rights, and promoting long-term change. However, laws and policies alone are not enough to shift mindsets, cultural representation and media also have a strong impact in challenging stereotypes and shaping public perceptions.
The arts, fashion, and media industries provide platforms to express identity, preserve heritage, and promote diversity. Fashion, in particular, has become more than just an industry of trends, it serves as a bridge between culture and empowerment, allowing different communities to share their stories on a global stage. Business and education also play an important role in driving change, providing the resources and knowledge needed for people to grow and succeed. While these industries may seem separate, they often intersect, influencing one another to create lasting social impact.
H.E. Sheikha Denitsa Al Shanfari has dedicated her career to these areas, using diplomacy, advocacy, and cultural initiatives to bring attention to important social issues. As a human rights advocate and former government advisor, she has worked to improve policies for marginalized communities. In media and fashion, she has led initiatives that highlight cultural identity and break stereotypes. At the same time, she is part of a respected business family in Oman, where education and entrepreneurship play a key role in development.

In this conversation, H.E. Sheikha Denitsa Al Shanfari shares insights into her experiences, the challenges she has faced, and her vision for a more inclusive future.
The First Roma Woman in Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Born and raised in Bulgaria and holder of a high school diploma in Economics, a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, and a Master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, H.E. Sheikha Denitsa Al Shanfari made history as the first Roma woman to serve in the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her work in government focused on human rights, integration policies, and diplomatic relations, with a strong emphasis on advocating for Roma rights, women’s empowerment, and youth education. Over the years, she has held key advisory roles, influencing policies that address systemic inequalities and promote inclusivity.
“Breaking barriers as the first Roma woman in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was both an honor and a big challenge. I was only 22 at the time—a young mother, a student and a full time working employee of MFA. It was one of the most difficult periods of my life. I was raising my daughter on my own while striving to excel in a world that often questioned my presence simply because of my ethnicity.” Denitsa shared with us when asked about the challenges she faced as the first Roma woman to serve in Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“I faced deep-rooted stereotypes and doubts about my abilities, not only from society but sometimes even from within the institution itself. I had to work twice as hard to prove my competence and commitment, constantly walking a tightrope between personal responsibilities and professional expectations.” Denitsa added, when explaining how demanding it was for her to do her work, not just very well but perfectly, in a very high standard so she could prove herself as being the perfect fit for the job. What mainly motivated Denitsa was knowing that she was paving the way for other Roma women and girls, showing them that success is possible regardless of their origin, ethnicity and background.
Building a Future Where Women Lead and Thrive
As a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment, H.E. Sheikha Denitsa Al Shanfari has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for women in both government and cultural initiatives. During the interview she emphasized that empowering women requires more than just policy changes, it necessitates a cultural shift.
“In my experience, the key factors are education, mentorship, and representation. Women need access to quality education, support systems that guide their leadership journey, and role models who show what’s possible. Equally important is dismantling patriarchal structures that limit women’s participation in leadership.”
Denitsa advocates for creating programs that nurture leadership from an early age and ensuring women are integral to decision-making.
“ To create more opportunities, we must invest in programs that cultivate leadership from an early age and ensure that women are at the decision-making tables, not as tokens, but as agents of real change. It’s also crucial to build networks that foster solidarity and collaboration among women across sectors. When women lift each other up, entire communities transform!” Denitsa added when we asked her about the key factors that help women rise to leadership positions and how we can create more opportunities for future generations.

Her work is an example of how seemingly separate paths can intersect and complement each other in the pursuit of positive change.

I see diplomacy, advocacy, and cultural work not as separate paths but as interconnected tools to drive positive change. Discipline, time management, and staying grounded in purpose are key.”
Denitsa also shares valuable lessons from her journey that can inspire women in business and leadership.

You can lead with empathy, advocate for others, build bridges across cultures, and still succeed. The most important lesson is this: never underestimate the power of your own voice and vision.”
