In an era where leadership is often measured by short-term achievements, the true test of influence lies in the ability to create lasting impact. Results may earn a leader respect, but enduring admiration from communities and nations is built on consistent action and measurable transformation.
For more than a decade, Dr. Rasha Kelej has embodied this philosophy. As CEO of the Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA, she has shaped a model of leadership that goes beyond corporate success to deliver tangible social progress across continents. Her work has touched thousands of lives through healthcare capacity building, women’s empowerment, and Girl education initiatives that are creating sustainable change in Africa, Asia, and beyond.
A Vision for Purpose-Driven Leadership
Based in Dubai, Dr. Kelej has led the programs of the Merck Foundation for more than 14 years. Under her leadership, the Foundation has expanded into a global platform dedicated to transforming patient care landscape and empowering vulnerable communities.
Her approach to leadership is defined by collaboration and inclusivity. Recognizing the powerful role of national leadership in driving social progress, she has partnered with more than 33 African and Asian First Ladies, working closely with them to implement impactful programs within their countries. These partnerships have enabled the Foundation to operate not only at policy level but also at the grassroots, ensuring that its initiatives deliver real and measurable benefits.
Dr. Kelej’s dedication to social development has earned her international recognition. She has been repeatedly named among the most influential Africans and African women, reflecting the widespread respect for her work across the continent. Her commitment to public service was further demonstrated during her tenure as a Senator in the Egyptian Senate, where she advocated for policies supporting social development and health equity. She has also been honored with an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) and numerous other recognitions for her contributions to healthcare capacity building and women’s empowerment.

Transforming patient care landscape Through Education
One of the most transformative aspects of Dr. Kelej’s leadership is the Merck Foundation scholarship program for healthcare providers. Through this initiative, more than 2,500 scholarships of one year diploma and two year master degree , have been awarded to doctors from 52 countries across over 44 critical and underserved medical specialties.
These scholarships focus on fields where many developing countries historically lacked trained specialists, including oncology, fertility and reproductive medicine, endocrinology, cardiology, diabetes management, Paediatric emergency, neonatal care, psychiatry and many more.
The impact has been profound. In several countries, patients previously had no access to specialized treatment and were forced to travel abroad or forgo care entirely. Today, thanks to these programs, new specialists are practicing locally, first fertility and oncology centers have been established, and healthcare systems are becoming more resilient.
For Dr. Kelej, this represents the essence of leadership: creating systems that continue to benefit communities long after individual initiatives are completed.
Breaking Stigma Through the “More Than a Mother” Movement
Among her most influential initiatives is the “More Than a Mother” campaign, which she created in 2015 to address infertility stigma and empower infertile women and couples through access to information, education, health and change of mindset.
In many societies, infertility has long been associated with deep social stigma directed primarily toward women. Through awareness campaigns, medical speciality training, and policy engagement, the movement challenges this harmful narrative.
Dr. Kelej emphasizes that infertility is a medical condition that can be prevented and treated and affect both men and women, and that no woman should be defined by her ability to bear children. By bringing this conversation into the public sphere, she has helped restore dignity to countless women and families in Africa.
The campaign also promotes infertility prevention, male infertility awareness, and improved access to fertility and reproductive care across participating countries.
Educating Girls to Shape the Future
While healthcare strengthens societies today, Dr. Kelej firmly believes that education secures their future.
Through the Merck Foundation’s “Educating Linda” program, more than 1,200 annual scholarships are provided to high-performing yet underprivileged African schoolgirls across numerous countries.
By supporting girls to complete their education, the initiative addresses root causes of inequality and contributes to tackling broader challenges such as child marriage, poverty, and gender-based violence.
Dr. Kelej often emphasizes that educating a girl does not only change one life—it transforms entire generations.

Creativity as a Tool for Social Change
A distinctive element of Dr. Kelej’s leadership is her creative approach to advocacy. She believes that social change requires not only policy and programs but also cultural transformation.
Capitalizing on her talents and Under her direction, the Merck Foundation has integrated music, television, storytelling, and fashion into its awareness campaigns. Through initiatives such as the pan-African television program “Our Africa,” educational storybooks, animated films, and awareness songs produced in multiple languages, critical health and social messages are reaching audiences across diverse communities.
In addition, thousands of journalists have been trained to report responsibly on health and social issues, while awards recognizing excellence in media, film, music, and fashion continue to encourage creative advocacy.
By merging creativity with purpose, Dr. Kelej has demonstrated that art and storytelling can play a powerful role in challenging stigma and promoting healthier societies.
A Leadership Legacy in the Making
Dr. Rasha Kelej’s work continues to expand across continents, building partnerships that translate vision into measurable impact. She represents a new model of leadership—one where corporate excellence, partners trust and humanitarian commitment are inseparable.
For aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders, her journey offers a powerful lesson: leadership is not defined by authority alone but by the courage to address difficult challenges and the dedication to create lasting solutions.
In a world increasingly seeking authentic impact, Dr. Rasha Kelej’s work stands as a reminder that when leadership is guided by purpose, compassion, and persistence, it evolves into something greater.
It becomes a legacy.
